Thought I'd create a build thread to show off a few of the bits I've been doing on my SD. I was originally going to leave it alone as it's only my daily driver but, me being me plus Lockdown boredom, that hasn't lasted long!

I haven't got many plans for it - just subtle and hopefully cheap changes to make it a bit more personal to me.

^ This was the day after I got it home. I was very impressed with it on the run back from Edinburgh - it returned over 60 mpg which I was more than happy with!

First thing was first - A trip up to see @Mr Watton to get the all important FOM branding plastered on my windows

I then decided to tackle the faded red 'S' and SD' badges. I bought some stickers from SMPS2012 which worked a treat and looked great...

Until I got too enthusiastic with the pressure washer!

I'd like to note that this was not because of the quality of the stickers - they were spot on! It was my fault for not preparing the surface on the rear badge properly before fitting. You can see in the first fitment picture how dirty the car was and all I did was give the badge a quick wipe down.. lesson learned!

I took the car on a  FOM run out in the winter which resulted in me returning in a half brown car. None of my cars have ever been as dirty as that!  I'm glad I took the SD that day and not the JCW.

Around that time I also bought a second set of alloys for cheap and had them refurbed in Anthracite to mount my winter tyres on. Another proper job done by The Wheel Specialist.

I'm a firm believer that a private reg sets a car off really nicely - so I bought another one! Also note the blackline rear lights that I swapped for my original ones. Always been a lover of these so jumped on the opportunity.

With the blackline lights came the idea of doing a dechrome. I'm useless at DIY so I usually pay someone to do cosmetic changes to my cars but, with it being my daily and me not wanting to spend much money on it, I thought I'd have a shot at it.

I had a beltline kit that I'd been hoarding for around two years so that was first. It isn't perfect but I didn't make a total arse of it so that's a win in my book. The chrome beltline actually had a lot rusty spots and marks on it which didn't seem to want to come off so some work was needed regardless.

Next up I had the bright idea to paint the side scuttles. What possessed me to do that I'll never know but they haven't turned out too badly. Again, they're not perfect but I can always redo them in the future if I feel the need.

I hand painted the red into the 'S' and then masked it off before spraying the chrome around it gloss black. Looks alright from a distance.

I've currently got the rest of the chrome off. I thought I'd have a go at spraying that too - It has now been sprayed and I'm just waiting for it to dry.

In the meantime I didn't consider that I might have to go somewhere in the car! I've borrowed the trim off the R59 which coincidentally is black. I also bought some cheap door handle covers from eBay - they're alright for the money and do the job. They'll probably end up getting ruined anyway with the amount I use the car.

Note the JCW side scuttles in the below pictures have been replaced with the ones above.

I think it looks pretty good fully dechromed! I'm interested to know what other people's opinions are, too.

For now, that's the stage the car is at but I have got a few plans for the future..

A different set of wheels and tyres are imminent as it is still wearing winter rubber. I've got the original black wheels but they are in desperate need of a refurb and some new tyres. I might just sell them and get something different? For now I'll put the old JCW ones on as they're readily available and have plenty of tread left on the tyres.

One of the front shocks has started to mist a bit so a new pair are probably due sometime this year. I'm toying with the idea of lowering springs while I'm at it but I'm not too sure. Yes, they'll look good but I don't know if I can justify the cost.

I'm also toying with the idea of Joey Modding the headlights though I might try and find a cheap used pair just in case I make a mess - which I probably will!

I'd also contemplated a remap, but I think it has enough power for what I use it for.

So much for me buying the car and telling myself I'd do nothing to it! Oh well.

I think we all knew you couldn’t leave it alone (the MINI as well)

It is looking much better without the chrome. Top Job 👍🏻

It's looking good, I still remember you saying it wouldn't stay untouched and we should've put bets on! :) its unbelievable how much de-chrome makes!

If we’d had bets I would have lost. I would have guessed 2 months
