R53 - ongoing build

Recommended Posts

I picked my R53 up towards the end of last year, so not had it that long.

I'd always wanted one after my mam had one when they first came out and then I worked for BMW for a while and got to drive a few along with JCW ones too.

This one was a clean example for its age - 78k miles on the clock, a few mods which included 15% pulley, Miltek non-resonated cat back exhaust and a couple of other small bits.

Below is a picture not long after I first got it

At this point I had done a few extra mods:

Engine:

Kavs 15% pulley

Dave.f airbox

Samco intake

Milltek non resonated cat back

Chassis:

Front upper strut brace

Wheels:

Standard painted grey

Body:

Aero rear bumper

Black plasti dip grill, badges, headlight surrounds, scoop

Tinted rear lights

The rear lights were an eysore so they had to go. I replaced these with some smoked LED ones. Also I got some graphics to fit into the aero bumper as it looked a bit plain without them. Once again i went with black and dark silver.

After these few mods I started collecting other parts that will eventually find their way onto the car.

I currently have a few suspensions/handling parts waiting to be fitted. These include:

KW V1 coilovers (2nd hand, need some refurb work)

Compbrake Adjustable front top mounts

Hardrace adjustable rear control arms

Whiteline 20mm ARB

I fitted a few engine bay parts.

These included a Canton header tank along with Stanton pressure cap.

The old one had seen better days and this Canton item looks much better than the standard one.

Along with this I replaced the cheap ebay front strut brace with the lovely looking GTT one. Much better.

After doing these few bits and bobs I moved onto finding some other bits to replace.

I decided to go with the blue/black theme - therefore the beltline and all chrome was blacked - I replaced the standard bonnet scoop for one of the Atomspeed ones.

I also managed to pick up a set of MG Hairpin wheels for a good price. The difference in the ride after these replaced the standard 17" wheels with run flat tyres was amazing.

I also replaced the front grills with the much better looking aero grill kit. Bit of a pain to fit the lower piece into the non aero bumper and involved slicing up the brand new part with a dremel, but got it fitted flush evenutally.

I've done a few other bits and pieces with the car up to now - done a full stud conversion, makes changing wheels much easier.

The rear seats are gone and I am going to fabricate a rear seat delete at some point.

I have a GTT rear strut bar waiting to go in.

I also have R56 Cooper S Brakes waiting to be fitted. The flare nuts on both sides are knackered so I think I need to get a garage to sort them out.

I will be looking at getting some bucket seats eventually along with possibly a roll cage.

I still have a big pile of parts waiting to be fitted which I haven't had time to fit yet. I have some holidays booked with work soon though so hoping to get everything put onto it then

You don't hang around with the mods. You must have a good idea where you are aiming the car to be.

Loving the progress so far

Stud conversion, think that’ll be my next thing!

I guess you do all the work yourself?

Yeah I've done everything myself so far. Going to need to get help with the brake conversion and probably the suspension fitting though.

Stud conversion is easy to do. Just make sure the threads are clean and that you have the right loctite. Also do it when you can leave them to set for 24hours before fully torquing the wheel nuts on

The most recent job was just something I'd been wanting to do for a while. The main interior carpet was blue and I was never keen on it. I've had black matts in since I've had it though so the only bit you could see was behind the front seats and near the handbrake/gear lever.

Managed to source a good condition second hand black carpet on eBay so got it swapped over.

Was a bit of a pain of a job but that seems to be a recurring theme now, not sure if it's the car or me [emoji23]7ae822c7f151f6159091ec74f92e89d0.jpg201803 ... 2e89d0.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180313/7ae822c7f151f6159091ec74f92e89d0.jpg' alt='URL>'>

Fitted the vibratechnics gearbox mount today. Got the upper and lower engine mounts too so all sorted now. Wasn't too bad, little bit fiddly, but I dropped a bolt and spent about an hour looking for that!

Just got some new seats ready to go in, just need to sort out the runnera/mounts ad4f74f1b5074d555e8072b4853cc3f4.jpg201803 ... 3cc3f4.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180324/ad4f74f1b5074d555e8072b4853cc3f4.jpg' alt='URL>'>1657415c276d8c6ae193812a5b0bce85.jpg201803 ... 0bce85.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180324/1657415c276d8c6ae193812a5b0bce85.jpg' alt='URL>'>

Nothing worse than loosing a bolt or washer. I lost one of my drilled titanium washers the other day, only to find it landed on top of the driveshaft! What are the chances!! Haha.

Nice seats [emoji1303][emoji1303]

Honestly, it was the longest part of the job trying to find that! Turns out it had dropped into the jack that was pushing the gearbox up and wedged in there! Was glad I found it though, had the throttle body off and did think it had dropped in there [emoji50]

Making the most of my time off work. Got the hardrace rca's fitted along with the whiteline ARB. Was hoping to have the coilovers sorted so I could fit those at the same time. Possibly have those this week and will crack on with them. Will be looking to get the seats fitted this week too. c24ba8d7f10f57df52e543f39a653276.jpg201804 ... 653276.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/c24ba8d7f10f57df52e543f39a653276.jpg' alt='URL>'>395802b28467f8d7640550ca7f7802df.jpg201804 ... 7802df.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/395802b28467f8d7640550ca7f7802df.jpg' alt='URL>'>d91126104ca90f60d4123c6207d29812.jpg201804 ... d29812.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/d91126104ca90f60d4123c6207d29812.jpg' alt='URL>'>61e15c82760ebf89e07c02f8c349d68a.jpg201804 ... 49d68a.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/61e15c82760ebf89e07c02f8c349d68a.jpg' alt='URL>'>e8de9041daf77fef49d8880a23b9b6e9.jpg201804 ... b9b6e9.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/e8de9041daf77fef49d8880a23b9b6e9.jpg' alt='URL>'>6867b5c834ebd2e7b413fe413580f7cf.jpg201804 ... 80f7cf.jpg"><a href=https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/6867b5c834ebd2e7b413fe413580f7cf.jpg' alt='URL>'>

Not sure the ARB has made a massive difference yet, supposedly see the benefits of it when the coilovers are on. It does seem to want to turn in a bit sharper and keep turning instead of pushing forward into understeer.
