The (not so) Hobo Express

Recommended Posts

So.....I've had my Mini for almost exactly two years, so I think it's probably high time I put together a FOM build thread. Here's the car the day I picked it up, a very late R53 (April '06) with 42k on the clock

Needless to say it didn't stay that way for long :) (edited the pic for a clearer one)

Being too tight to pay for a dave-f hybrid filter I made my own hobo-hybrid 92B89189-03A9-484D-A219-FFACFF54CC9D-640-000000EFB8D8FBE0.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

stealthy...

Next to go was the rusty exhaust..

seeing as i'd only had the car a few weeks I complained to the dealer and a deal was struck which got me £250 towards the cost of a catback system from AAS...luvverly!

Never being particularly satisfied with anything I decided to go a bit further with my airbox mod..cue the hobo-hybrid part 2, which opens up the feed in the bottom of the airbox and costs a pocket friendly £1.75ish (apologies for the bad pic)

Next on the hitlist was the troublesome wheelgap

kicked right into touch with a set of AP coilovers from Rich at Orranje

much better

I was never keen on the chrome scoop so wrapped in in carbon vinyl as a temporary measure (its still on)

spotlights had gone rusty which was pretty awful for a six year old car, that gave me an excuse to rid the car of them for good

private plate went on and I decided to black out the rear lights

blacked out the beltline as well

then it was time to swap out the grille for an aero one (fully flushed)

Next came a set of second hand TD 1.2's in black

e7ata8uv_zps01671f0c.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

egu2yvyh_zps014e820f.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

next came a bit of a de-lip to help me get over the numerous speed bumps round where I live

vuhegu3u_zps88883482.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

va5edy5e_zps27343e15.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

Forgot to add....by this point i'd also fitted a 17% Kavs pulley (that didn't end well, more on this later) colder plugs and a reduced belt. The plugs BCR8ES's were ditched in favour of NGK Iriduims within days of fitting as they just didn't work when cold

time for an oil change, using the biggest socket I've ever bought (which I've now mislaid, doh)

3utatehu_zps8274924b.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

then it was time to step things up a bit...

One of the first sets of RTM adjustable top mounts in the country and some 5mm eibach spacers

varyny5u_zps2c3089b5.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

awesome bits of kit and thoroughly recommended

ahaqyvez_zps994c65aa.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

then being too tight to pay for adjustable rear droplinks I made my own

8esyny7y_zpse635d3a7.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

yhuzasyj_zps629f9c91.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

they help the back of the car sit more level at rest as its no longer fighting the anti roll bar

chucked on a wheel bearing on the front nearside to replace this mess

du9a9y7u_zps7f815afc.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

and a shark fin aerial which cost about four quid off ebay

8y9u9edy_zpsaa6e44f8.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

Next I added a splash of colour with some mirror caps painted BMW Atacama Yellow

se7uvahe_zps91adaff0.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

7atarehu_zps0c503229.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

8u3e8ene_zps701548e3.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

then it was off to Revolution in Gateshead to ditch the runflats

ju4uvuvy_zpscb36e226.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

in favour of these

Smaller profile tyres meant I had to drop the car further to reduce wheelgap (shame that), which left the car sitting like this

7u5a6ary_zps23a2bc57.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

next came a failed expansion tank cap, but as a precaution I opted to replace the bottle as well

umudujyr_zps0c8433d2.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

much better

ymeruvu5_zps853f4337.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

as a little side project I knocked myself up a gopro mount from some bits I had spare in the garage and my towing eye

ja5uzaty_zpsbae1136e.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

and in prep for a future mod I got a spare intercooler horn and smoothed off all the casting marks and such

jeregasa_zps06a0bb02.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

Next I decided to go for bigger injectors, but once again being too tight to pay for JCW 380's I bought some Bosch 380's from a focus st 225, same spray pattern but newer tech

eneqete6_zps737293c3.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

I also sourced some parts to make connectors (pigtails) that I could graft into the injector harness

y8uzeqyb_zps0b391467.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

6a2usuqa_zps6353ca34.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

You can run these without a tune (I did for a couple of days but judging by the soot in my exhaust it was well rich) but I opted to have my ECU flashed with the JCW210 tune

6y6ejyra_zpsd42dc326.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

The next two mods arrived pretty much together....

an OBX Racing 4-2-1 manifold

uzesequn_zpsaf24aac9.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

and a AEM water methanol injection kit

Bought a cheapo gopro housing and modded it to take an external microphone (its rear facing in this pic to pick up engine and charger noise)

u9yze4yq_zpsba9a482f.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

and changed my mind about the colour of my mirrors and went orange

a4enygez_zps904f5b2a.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

veha4ate_zpsf329f66a.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

Next I began prep for the meth kit install, tapping the nozzle into the smoothed intercooler horn

etysa2ym_zpsfb945c7b.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

OBX install time :)

made a jig for the original mani cat

7yge3y8u_zps0dda1479.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

did some cutting, grinding and copious amounts of swearing and came up with this

upudatu5_zps660aca1e.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

I took the cat into work and a really helpful chap i'd never even met before tig welded the OBX flange on. He did a cracking job of it too

5u4u7una_zps3756bd3f.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

here's the mani on the car (lovely colours mmm)

myhyze4y_zps37d4f4c2.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

that done I moved onto the meth kit

to cut a long story short, there was lots of wires

e4a3y4e3_zpsd1da4b62.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

pipes

saja7e5a_zps6f7ea3a8.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

6y6y7utu_zpsfb3534a4.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

and trim modding

be7agasa_zps32709786.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

but all went well and its in and functioning perfectly. had to wait nearly a week after it was fitted to test it properly as there's nowhere local that sells methanol....that problem is now resolved... :)

4yzabyvy_zps898dac83.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

when I was fitting the intercooler horn I also replaced the bypass valve with a new one which i'd tweaked. These things are notoriously badly setup from the factory. The gap around my old one meant lost boost

de-wipered the rear

usy7yba6_zps0070111c.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

Problem! aaaaargh! is it a slipping belt? ....changes belt.....still getting occasional squeak....must be tensioner....replaces tensioner.....still no good....misses 1320 dyno day...aaaaaargh2......finds problem.....slipping Kavs pulley...now apparently you're supposed to use threadlock on these, it says so in the instructions (which they don't supply), anyhow to cut a long story short

old one had to be cut off

mymahyqa_zps5c02f5f0.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

now replaced with an Alta one which uses a different clamping system which took up the wear on the damaged shaft

7e5amypu_zps8a7b2aae.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

agavy2u9_zps23317954.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

problem solved

next brakes... I bought some second hand Brembo's which turned out to be the Thruxton big brake kit from West Engineering, after a bit of a refurb

ydeqysez_zps6ebba84d.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

syqyhaja_zpsa1ebfa93.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

y5ege7y5_zpscce71627.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

i'll be going from this to this if you get my drift

9b16c0b67c9e1b1bc650333440a2ed3d_zps98399cc7.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

earlier today

cfbce3b639648a8e57fe354117a812ed_zpsbf2551ed.jpgLINK_TEXT><e>

And that's things up to date....for now :)

Brake related.nightmares continue.... I'd been using some heat to free off a seized flexi connection and the brake line exploded!f2cac433317cb4593afe7bd93ab2d221.jpg08 ... b2d221.jpg"><a href=http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/08/23/f2cac433317cb4593afe7bd93ab2d221.jpg' alt='URL>'>

It didn't half go pop luckily the spray of scalding hot brake fluid went down over. Smoke everywhere... A proper nasty pickle. Worst thing is its still seized and now I'm gonna have to replace the whole line back to the abs pump

Still not much further on from the last pic. The brakes are in place 429f295e06109511b077f0f6ad472855.jpg08 ... 472855.jpg"><a href=http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/08/26/429f295e06109511b077f0f6ad472855.jpg' alt='URL>'>

But that's about it as I've got no brake lines. I've pretty much decided that I'm going to replace all the steel lines with braided hose (which isn't as expensive as you might think) but HEL are out of stock of some if the bits I need. Trying others tomorrow and hoping for better luck [FOUR LEAF CLOVER]

Just need a pair of replacement rear calipers and the car will be driveable again

(the black line is the one for meth)
